Hi. I’m Eliciana Nascimento, the writer and director of The Summer of Gods. I grew up among Afro-Brazilian religious traditions like Candomblé and Umbanda. My mom and grandma would tell us stories of how our ancestors survived slavery and created hideout communities in order to keep our culture alive. The film I wrote blends together these stories, my own experience with the African gods known as Orishas, and childhood memory of visiting my great grandmother in her remote island. I grew up in Bahia where this film takes place. It’s a region in Brazil known for deeply-rooted African heritage. Today my birthplace boasts the largest concentration of African descendants outside Africa and ever since our ancestors arrived on Brazil’s shores 500 years ago, Afro-Brazilian traditions of Orisha worship have taken shape.
  • My hope is that this film will inspire folks to understand, respect and feel proud of our traditions.
